In recent years, the technological revolution has drastically transformed the profession of journalism and content development the way we had known it before. The intellectual, professional, and technical skills to practice the profession have undergone a drastic change. Although, the core foundational concepts and skills will last forever, such as writing skills, language proficiency, and knowledge base which are at the core to develop news and other forms of content but a new set of skills are required for New Age Journalism which is dominated by multimedia and content development. The new technology offers numerous options for the delivery of the content.
To develop content for different delivery platforms, multimedia skills are required which involves a combination of text, audio, video, animation, and graphics. In a nutshell, content development and packaging it to meet the demands of various delivery platforms holds the future for media professionals who will not be just journalists but multiskilled to take up jobs in any relevant sector. That’s what a multimedia journalist or content writer is.
In the wake of the emergence of digital and social media, the skills for content development demands different skills far beyond traditional skills. The niche and emerging streams need to be addressed by acquiring new skills. Traditional journalism education needs to be kept abreast with fast-changing technology. The proposed course is aimed at filling these gaps and imparting training in niche and emerging areas.
The course is divided into two categories of inputs- core inputs in multimedia and content development and enrichment inputs to provide an overview of the new media landscape. This will create a platform of education and industry interface. Most of the resource persons are drawn be from the media industry. The idea is to impart training in the simulated work environment so that the participants can get a real feel of the functioning and operations of the news and media industry.
The course is not just focused to train participants in the news industry but will cover all segments where there are huge job opportunities as content writers, social media experts, and digital marketers. It can be news media, websites of various industrial and business corporations. In today’s context, every organization, political party, individual politicians, NGOs, etc need social media professionals who have expertise in digital marketing, brand management, and image building.
Taking this into consideration, we have invited eminent professionals from diverse fields to impart training in the core area of multimedia and content development and to provide an overview of the overall news and media industry so that the participants can relate the training to the wider media landscape.
Objectives
The objective of the course is to keep working professionals, faculty, and students abreast with the latest transformation that is taking place in the wake of the digital revolution specifically with the advent of artificial intelligence and algorithms which are changing job profiles in every sphere and demand new skills.
The course is to create new bridges between the media academics and the industry so that we are fully equipped to produce industry-ready professionals and also sensitize the industry and academics to get connected. The programmes will facilitate a better understanding between media academics and the industry and share their respective perspectives on media education and practice.
The programme is aimed at sensitizing the faculty to understand and develop insight on the needs and requirements of the media industry that has emerged in the wake of the digital revolution so that we are able to introduce innovations and design our training-teaching methodology to produce industry-ready professionals. This will also help us to develop linkages with the news and media industry.
The programmes will focus on core skills that will remain relevant for all time to come, such as excellent writing skills and disciplined reading habits to develop a sound knowledge base. The development of quality content is the first challenge and new technology provides numerous platforms of delivery. Each platform requires a different set of skills.
The course will focus on imparting skills in niche and emerging streams. All organizations need to be trained manpower in content development and its delivery through the different delivery platforms. Expertise in social media and related digital marketing is the future for any professional not confined to journalism and mass communication. In the present context, every member of the workfare of any organization needs skills in multimedia and content development.

Subhash Dhuliya, Course Director
Professor Subhash Dhuliya is a distinguished academician, researcher and educational administrator. He has been the Vice Chancellor of Uttarakhand Open University, Director and Professor of School of Journalism and New Media Studies at (IGNOU), Professor and Course Director at Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) and Professor of Culture and Media Studies at Central University of Rajasthan. He has over four decades of experience in media academics and as a practicing journalist.
He has also been the Editor of the Communicator and Sanchar Madhyam – quarterly research journals in English and Hindi respectively of the Indian Institute of Mass Communication and Assistant Editor & Editorial Writer at the Times of India Group of Newspapers
Before entering into media academics, worked at the Times of India Times and the Amrita Bazar Group of Newspapers in senior editorial positions for thirteen years. In Times Group has been associated with the Times Television and Times School of Media Studies and worked as Assistant Editor( Editorial Writer) and Sunday Magazine Editor at Navbharat Times.
At IIMC he has been Course Director and resource person for Indian Information Service Courses and diploma courses. He has also designed and worked as resources person for the specialized courses conducted for Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service and Senior Army Officers (resource person at Army High Command Course conducted at Army College of Combat). Rajesh Joshi
In a career spanning over three decades, Rajesh worked in print, broadcast and digital media. Founding member of BBC Hindi digital team. Part of the core team that led the digital transformation of the Sinhalese and Nepali services of the BBC. Besides covering big stories from different parts of the world – from Brazil to West Africa, the UK, the US, Cuba, Pakistan, and Europe, he has covered Indian politics extensively, such as, Kashmir, Maoist insurgency and the Kargil war. He was also Planning Editor of BBC Hindi Service in London.
Rajesh has done BBC (London) Courses in Advance Leadership Development, Advance course in Broadcast Journalism, Digital / Social Media Storytelling Writing to Pictures.
