US retail and technology giant Amazon has announced a major round of corporate job cuts, eliminating approximately 14,000 positions—around 4% of its global office workforce—as part of a large-scale restructuring effort. In a statement released on Tuesday, the company said the move is aimed at streamlining operations, reallocating resources, and accelerating its transition toward artificial intelligence–driven innovation.
The company emphasized that advances in AI are reshaping how businesses operate, noting that AI is now “enabling companies to innovate much faster than ever before.” Amazon said the restructuring will enable it to cut costs, integrate more automation across its businesses, and focus investments on areas with strong long-term growth potential, including generative AI, cloud computing, logistics optimization, and its rapidly expanding AI-powered retail ecosystem.
The job cuts will primarily affect corporate and tech roles across several divisions, though Amazon did not specify which departments will be most impacted. The company reassured that front-line warehouse and delivery roles will not be affected by this round of layoffs.
Amazon’s decision comes amid a broader wave of job reductions across the global tech industry, as companies recalibrate workforce structures and shift aggressively toward AI-led models. Over the past two years, Amazon has already cut more than 27,000 jobs, making this one of the largest and most sustained downsizing cycles in its history.
Industry analysts say the move highlights both the disruptive impact of AI on traditional corporate workflows and Amazon’s determination to remain competitive as rivals such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta pour billions into generative AI development.
Amazon stated that it will support affected employees with severance packages, transition assistance, and extended healthcare benefits. The restructuring, the company added, is aimed at strengthening efficiencies and ensuring it remains “well-positioned for the next era of innovation.”
